FOCUS

An important aspect of my work is participation and agency: most of my work is influenced by the participants taste in music and movement; it has community arts elements, and is created in close dialogue with new audiences.

WORKSHOP AIMS

INFORMATION ON REGULAR WORKSHOPS

1. CELEBRATORY CARNIVAL DANCE. (Afro-Brazilian rhythms inspired by the Candomble divinities, regional dances such as Maracatu, the sensual and energetic Samba and collective dances to the sound of Samba Reggae).Rosaria will also teach fusion techniques, performance skills and improvisation for all those interested in taking the learning that step further.

2. CELEBRATORY CARNIVAL DANCE FOR OVER 60S!!!!! Rosaria and salsa dancer and teacher, Aurora Dominguez, will be leading these sessions where you will be able not only to keep fit but also to learn from other cultures and traditions.

Date: Every Friday, 13.30 to 14.30 at the Cornerstone Community Centre

Fee: £18 for a 6 week-course, or drop-in £4

3. BCM. Rosaria is the resident choreographer for this carnival club for young people. It consists of workshops happening in local schools and community centres leading to performances in festivals and carnivals. For further information check www.carnivalmonster.bebo.com

4. MARACATU NAO E (Brighton). Rosaria is a guest teacher for this Maracatu band, introducing its dance troupe to the world of the dances from the North East of Brazil (specially Maracatu) and choreographing performances. For further information check www.brightonmaracatu.com/index.htm

5. CARNIVALESQUE (Brighton). New club night recreating the electrifying atmosphere of World music for the people, through the international language of music & dance as it is experienced from the streets of Notting Hill, cities of Romania, to the beaches of Trinidad and all over the globe. The club night starts with dance classes coordinated by Rosaria and delivered by Rosaria and other professional dancers like Ricardo Axe www.freewebs.com/ricardoaxe and Marta Scott.

SUMMER SCHOOLS 2008

Rosaria, working together with local artists and groups like Same Sky (www.samesky.co.uk) has choreographed and delivered dance pieces for two summer schools:

    Collaborations with other organisations

    ACTIVE FOR LIFE (Brighton and Hove). Rosaria is collaborating with Brighton and Hove Council in the delivery of movement and exercise classes for their programme for people over 60s. For further information please visit http://www.activeforlife.org.uk

    BRIGHTON DANCE NETWORK, Rosaria is collaborating with BDN in the delivery of community programmes exploring Brazilian and carnival rhythms. She has delivered courses for both adults and children.     Festivals and Carnivals (UK and Europe)

    SAMBEANDO 2007, Còrdoba, Spain. 8th of September 2007 (http://www.sambeando.com) Rosaria taught a set of Afro-Brazilian and Samba workshops which led to an outdoor parade.

    BRIGHTON CARNIVAL. Rosaria was the lead choreographer for the Brighton Carnival 2007 which took place on the 22nd of July. She delivered workshops at community centres with other local choreographers including Mim King, the Brighton Dance Network and Poi Passion.     WOMAD Rivermead 2003 and WOMAD Caceres (Spain 2003) with South African drummer and dancer, Risenga Makondo. Rosaria and Risenga delivered workshops which led to a final parade. In the case of the Caceres festival , the parade processed through town, with more than 1000 participants, and it was broadcasted on national and international TV www.womad.org
